Police have so far recovered just a single embroiderd green leaf

More than 350 hours work went into making a $10,000 quilt that was stolen in Melbourne last month, police said.

The distinctive green quilt, featuring leaves, branches and ferns, was snatched from an exhibition after it was loaned out by its New Zealand owners.

Melbourne CIU Senior Constable David Tarrant said the quilt's value came from the amount of time put into making it, rather than the materials used.

"It is not something you could sell within the quilting industry.

"It is the equivalent of someone trying to sell a famous piece of artwork in the art world, it is instantly recognisable," he said.

The quilt was stolen at the inaugural Australasian Quilt Convention.

On the last day of the convention, February 27, the quilt was wrapped in a white doona and left on top of a box of other quilts at the Melbourne Convention Centre, police said.

The next day the doona, with just one green embroidered leaf from the quilt inside, was found near a commercial rubbish bin at the centre.

Police said the quilt was due to return to a shop in Cheltenham on the last day of the convention.

uilt was left unattended for a short time.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
